Indian Paintrush

Castilleja, commonly known as Indian paintbrush is a beautiful flower is native to the west of the Americas from Alaska south to the Andes. This flower adapts in its environment with its protection and the sunlight usage. The Castilleja protects itself with a poison because is has a tendency to absorb and concentrate selenium in their tissues from the soils in which they grow, and could be very toxic if the roots or green parts of the plant are consumed. This plant is a plant that loves and absorbs all the sun growing high to block out the other plants sunlight and stealing the light for itself. The plant is most commonly found red and eye catching but also grows in different colors such as indigo. This is how the Castilleja adapts to the environment in the Montane Shrublands.
